Data: Most desktop computers and laptops will work in Israel as they are able 110/220. You need to either replace the cable or use an adapter to replace the plug. With Desktop systems, make sure to replace the power supply to 220-240 before you take it to Israel.
PC – If you have a current PC purchased in the last 3 years, I would advise bringing it. You can then install the Hebrew language and get a Hebrew keyboard. If your PC is under warranty, check with your provider to see if they will honor the warranty in Israel. If you look at getting a new PC, it is worth paying a little extra in Israel to ensure that you will have a warranty on the system, with the Hebrew pre-configured. Mac – the Mac will work in Israel. If you have one, take it. I would recommend taking out the AppleCare on the system before Aliyah. IDigital, an Apple representative in Israel, will honor the AppleCare warranty.
GPS: A GPS in Israel will cost at least double the price of a purchased in the United States. If you have a GPS device, you may be able to buy extra maps for it. Contact your provider or look for third-party solutions. If you have an iPhone 3G, Google maps work in Israel.
Many of the MIO GPS is unlocked and put up with IGO Israel Maps, which works quite well. Make sure to activate the special roads in the configuration if you intend to cross the green line. There is no decent Israel map for Garmin. If you do not mind the small screen, the GPS-enabled phones offered by operators with the GPS service at a significant cost advantage over buying a GPS unit in Israel
Cell Phones:. Most Unlocked Quad Band GSM phones will work here in Israel. Your CDMA-based phones (phones without SIM cards) will not work here. The iPhone 3G is now officially supported here by the major operators. Orange & Cellcom now offers Blackberry Internet service for the Blackberries. You can now get the BIS service for Blackberry without a Blackberry Enterprise Server.
Those who come to visit or for a pilot trip is not looking for a long term contract, you can buy a TalkMan SIM card from Celcom and load it with prepaid minutesVoice over IP phones. There are a number of options:
VoIP Box – You can bring in a VoIP box from Vonage, Tele Blend and other operators. You will be able to bring your phone with you and make unlimited calls back to the states. Many of these solutions suffer from poor quality when it is used here in Israel. This is usually as a result of the latency (number of routers the traffic passing through) from Israel to USAJiveTel – Is a VOIP provider, which has offices and support services based in Israel. They offer unlimited domestic and international packages and allows you to port your existing number service
magic jack – A device that connects to your PC or MAC, will allow you to make and receive unlimited calls to the states for 19.95 per year. The initial cost of the device in the states is 0.95 + 6.95 S & H. There are dealers in Israel that sells the unit locally from 200 NIS to 400 NIS. Magic Jack does not port your existing number as of yet, but claims this feature will be added once a year. .012 , 014, and 018 – The ISP services allow you to make low cost calls to the U.S. from Israeli land line or mobile phone. The quality of calls is good, but you pay per minute. This solution works well if you just need to make occasional calls and does not require a US-based number for incoming calls. Skype – offers unlimited subscription to a single country for the 0.95 or the world for 0.95 . In addition, you can buy a number from the country you are moving from, so that your family and friends may start calling you. If you prefer to use a phone to make and receive calls, there are a number of devices that allow you to use Skype on your existing phone or with a specialized Skype phone. Skype has recently been launched for the iPhone 3G. With a properly configured iPhone, you can use Skype to make and receive calls from Israel, and to friends and family abroad on an unlimited plan. This is a great way for family and friends to keep in touch with you. TCS – A service that provides a U.S. number on Israel land line or mobile phone. They offer discounted rates on calls to the United States.
TV: While most newer television sets are able to work on 220V, if you want to receive TV signals in Israel you need a set that is PAL condition. It is multi-region set that can display NTSC and PAL. With the YES cable you can get a B & W signal on an NTSC set connected to his cable box.
If you want to watch TV from your PC or monitor you can get a PAL tuner for your PC or to a VGA monitor, the quality is not great, but around, it’s a good way to look at, while is on the computer.
If you only want to use the TV to watch VHS and DVD, you can take with NTSC equipment to look at the existing collection, but you will not be able to watch PAL movies purchased in Israel. The best option would be to buy a multi-system unit so that you can watch PAL (TV, Israel DVD, Israel VHS) and NTSC (VHS and DVD from the States) on television. Video: Just as television in Israel run on the PAL standard, so do VHS and DVD. To watch a VHS, you would need either a PAL VCR, or a multi-video player. With DVDs, in addition to the format difference, they are often region-coded to work with players from the zone. If you want the ability to watch movies from the U.S. and Israel, look for a region free, multi-system (PAL / NTSC) device that supports110/220.
To watch PAL DVDs on your American bought the machine, try downloading the VLC viewer
Tivo :. While TiVo will not work in Israel, Cable companies offer DVR service
Slingbox:. This technology can connect a cable tuner in the states and broadcast the signal to any computer with Internet access or cell phone
